I recently read a really interesting article on memento mori in medieval and Renaissance Europe and was struck by the irreverence and humor surrounding it. And that definitely crept into something that was initially just a sketch based on Albert Besnard’s Discreet.

Pollinators: the lesbian urge to spend your 20s smoking on a balcony and looking miserable.
This is based on a 1968 Donna Gottschalk photo. She used photography in the 60s and 70s to “attempt to fathom” what it meant to be a lesbian when there was virtually no representation of it. Her stuff is extremely intimate and more than a little pensive and melancholic. Which is understandable. But queer joy is important so I threw a few flowers in there
